The release calendar: what is coming out, what you have to catch up on
Kitazo knows the release dates of the titles you follow and puts them in a calendar that holds only what concerns you: no releases from series you don't watch, no episodes you have already seen. This guide explains how to read it and how the notifications arrive.
Where it is
In the Continue tab, at the top, there is a calendar icon: it opens Coming up. The page shows the current month, day by day, with one row for every release that concerns you and a Today marker on the day you are on.
What is in it, and what isn't
Only what you still have to watch. In go the episodes of the series you have in progress or up to date, and the films on your watchlist, if they have a date. Out stay the series you set aside, the films you already watched and the episodes you marked. As soon as you mark something watched, it leaves the calendar: it is a to-do list, not an archive.
Each row says what comes out: an episode with season and number, or a bigger label when it matters more. Premiere flags the start of a new series; New season the start of a season, with how many episodes it will have and from when; Film a watchlist release. A day already gone shows Out and the number of episodes you have to watch.
A series page says the dates too: in the Episodes tab, next to an episode not yet out, you find Out today, Out tomorrow, Out in N days or TBA when the date hasn't been announced.
Before this month: the backlog
At the top of the calendar there is a Before… card, named after the current month, counting what you left behind: episodes aired in earlier months that you haven't watched, and watchlist films out for a while. Open it and everything is split into series and films, with the estimated time to catch up and three orderings: Oldest first, Most episodes and A–Z. Each series says since when you are behind, each film since when it is out.
When there is no backlog the card reads All caught up, which is the point of all this.
After this month: the future
At the bottom there is an After… card, again named after the month, with the next title due and how far the announced dates reach. Open it and you see the following months in the same format. If a series hasn't announced anything yet, it simply isn't there: Kitazo doesn't make up dates.
Empty months in between are skipped with a line that says so, so you don't scroll through blank pages.
Release-day notifications
Every morning Kitazo checks what comes out that day and tells whoever should know.
- A new episode arrives as a notification for anyone who has started that series, meaning watched at least one episode, and hasn't set it aside. Someone with the series on their watchlist who never started it gets nothing: there is no thread to pick up yet.
- A film arrives as a notification for anyone who has it on their watchlist.
The notifications appear in the New releases section of the in-app notifications. They reach your device as a push only if you turned push notifications on and left Releases (episodes and movies) enabled in the settings. A series also returns to the Continue tab, with the NEW badge, on the day the episode airs.
Where the dates come from
From TheTVDB's metadata, which Kitazo caches and refreshes periodically. A date that changes on TheTVDB changes here too at the next refresh, with a little delay. If you see a wrong date, from the title page you can use Refresh data from TheTVDB to force a reload, or Report something wrong with the title if the data is wrong there too. Dates are those of the first airing in the country of origin: a series that reaches your country a day later shows up the day before.
The calendar and your stats
The statistics page has a Time left to catch up entry that adds up the runtime of the backlog episodes and watchlist films: it is the same count as the calendar, seen as hours instead of days.
