Finding what to watch: search, trending, filters and a random pick

Kitazo has no algorithm chasing you. It has a search that also finds actors and directors, a chart of what the community is watching, filters by genre, network and era, and a button that picks at random when you don't feel like deciding. This guide lines them up.

The Search tab

The second tab at the bottom is Search. The box at the top takes titles, actors, directors and usernames, and the results split under the Titles, Actors, Directors and Users filters. Search "Villeneuve" and his films appear under Directors; search a name and the person to follow appears under Users. Every title card has the button to put it on your watchlist without opening it, and a label saying whether it is already on your watchlist, in progress, watched or set aside.

With the box empty the tab is a shop window: three quick cards, Trending, Discover and Groups, then three rows of titles, Most added, Most rated and Most favourited, each with its See all. Most added is also where, on first sign-in, you can mark in bulk the series you have already seen, season by season or all at once.

At certain times of year an extra row appears: Halloween picks in October and Christmas picks over the holidays, with filters like Classics, Scary, For everyone or Romantic.

Trending

Trending is a chart of what the community is adding and rating, with three windows, Today, Week and Month, and a choice between everything, films only and series only. It doesn't look at stars: it counts movement. An old series can climb the week it lands on a streaming service, which is exactly what you want to know when you are looking for what everyone is talking about.

Discover: the filters

Discover is the catalogue with filters: Genre, Network, Era, from the '90s to the 2020s, the type and Sort by, among Popular, Rating and Recent. Popular uses Kitazo's popularity, which adds watches, watchlist additions and ratings; Rating uses the community average. Results load in pages with Show more results.

At the top sits the Random pick card: it draws a title from the catalogue, honouring the filters you set, and Shuffle pick draws another. Details opens the page. If you want to draw only among the things you had already decided to watch, the shuffle icon in the Watchlist does the same over your own list.

From a title's page

Every title leads to others. The About tab has the cast and director, each tappable, the trailers and the Related titles you haven't watched row: similar by genre and popularity, filtered to what isn't in your diary yet, so the row never offers you things you have already seen.

The N you follow row says how many of the people you follow have seen it or are watching it, with their ratings: often the best recommendation there is.

People pages

Tapping an actor or a director opens their page with every title they appear in, sortable by Relevance, Year or A–Z, and a Filter button to narrow to films, series, talk shows or documentaries, and to watched or not watched. Seeing only what you haven't watched yet of an actor is a quick way to fill your watchlist.

The public charts

Outside the app, on the site, there are the Kitazo charts: the series and films the community rated highest, by genre and by year, the titles moving over the last thirty days, and the most added to watchlists. They use the same numbers as the app, with a minimum vote count for a title to enter. The page How the community score is calculated explains where they come from.

A title you can't find

The catalogue is TheTVDB, a database maintained by its community. If a film or series doesn't exist there, it doesn't exist on Kitazo either: you can add it yourself at thetvdb.com, and after approval, which sometimes takes a few days, it appears here too. If a title is there but has wrong data, from its page you can use Refresh data from TheTVDB or Report something wrong with the title.
