Community and friends: the feed, who to follow and what they see of you
Kitazo is a diary, but you keep it among other people. Who you follow fills your feed, and what you log fills theirs, as much as you decide. This guide explains how to build your circle, what shows up in the feed, and what controls you have over the people around you.
The Community tab
The third tab at the bottom, Community, has two views. General is the square: ratings and comments from the whole community, in order of time. For You is your feed, with three filters: All, Friends, with the activity of the people you follow, and Groups, with what happens in the groups you follow.
Anyone who doesn't want the social side can remove it from the bar with Hide the Community tab, in the View section of the settings. The diary works the same.
What is in the feed
A feed post is an activity: someone watched a film or an episode, finished a series, gave or changed a rating, rewatched something, commented, voted for a character, added a title to a group. Under every post you can like it and write a reply; replies open with See replies. A post about a title you haven't watched yet appears covered, with Show anyway to open it regardless.
The feed also carries Kitazo's official posts: announcements, questions to the community and polls, which you answer with Send vote. Replies to Kitazo posts are public and can be reported like any other comment.
Following someone
People are found from the Search tab, by choosing the Users filter and typing a name or username. On someone's profile the button is Follow; if that person already follows you, it becomes Follow back, and under the name you see Follows you. Following needs no answer: from then on their activity enters your feed, under the Friends filters, and you enter their follower count.
Some things require that you follow each other, meaning you are friends in Kitazo's sense: watching a series together, collaborating on a list, sending each other a title privately from the share sheet, and the Friends option in activity visibility.
Private profiles
With Private profile on in the settings, following you becomes a request: whoever taps Follow sees Requested, and you find the request in the Requests section of your notifications with Approve and Decline. Whoever already followed you stays. A private profile shows strangers only your name, picture and counters; activity, stats and public lists are seen only by your followers. If you unfollow a private profile, to come back you will have to ask again, and the app reminds you first.
What other people see of you
Every kind of activity has a visibility setting in the Privacy section: who sees when you watch, when you rewatch, when you rate a film or a series, when you vote for a character, your comments in the feed, your watched lists and your favourites. The choices are Public, Followers, Friends, meaning only people you follow back, and Private, meaning only you in your own history. For some activities, such as rewatches, there is no Public option.
You can also change the visibility of a single post after publishing it, or delete it, from the Activity tab of your profile. There you see your activity as others see it. Activities are kept for a month, then removed on their own, except those that received likes or replies; comments are never deleted by this cleanup.
One thing to watch: comments left on a title's page are always public there. The comments setting only decides who sees them in the feed.
Who you follow is watching it
On a title's page, the N you follow row opens Who you follow has seen it, for a film, or Who you follow is watching it, for a series: each person with their rating, or rating private if they don't share it, and for series which episode they are at, whether they finished or set it aside. It is the quickest way to know who you can talk to about it.
Three ways to keep someone at a distance
- Unfollow: their activity leaves your feed. If you shared a synced series or a list, the app warns you first: the sync stops, the list stays with whoever created it.
- Hide updates: that person no longer sees your activity in their feed and gets no notifications from you, but can keep following you and your profile stays visible to them. They don't notice.
- Block: neither of you sees the other's activity, profile, stats or comments any more, and follows in both directions are dropped. The list is under Blocked users in the settings, where you unblock.
There is also Mute push notifications, which pushes nobody away: it only takes that person's activity off your phone's alerts.
Sharing a title or a post
The share icon on a title's page, or on a post, opens a sheet in two parts. Above, the friends you follow each other with: pick and Send, and it reaches them as a notification. Below, the external channels: X, WhatsApp, Instagram, Copy link and More for everything else. The link is a public page on the site, of the form kitazo.app/series/… or kitazo.app/movie/…, with the title's preview; anyone with the app installed lands straight inside it.
Inviting someone who isn't here yet
From the user search, if the person you are looking for isn't signed up, you find Invite: it prepares a message with the Kitazo link to send them however you like. An account takes a minute to create, with email and password, with Google or, on iPhone, with Apple.
